Cast: Tonton Gutierrez, Dawn Zulueta, Jacklyn Jose
Directed by: Mel Chionglo
Synopsis:
The story of Barrio San Simon in Pampanga, one of the hardest hit by lahar when Mt. Pinatubo erupted in 1990, and how the unfortunate residents try to pick up the pieces of their lives and start all over again despite all the odds. It's also the heart-tugging chronicle of the lives of, specifically, Sheila (Dawn Zulueta) and Sonia (Jaclyn Jose) who show fortitude in the face of challenges and courage and determination in the worst situation any human being can find himself in. Sheila is a migrant worker from Germany who fights to keep her family intact at all costs. Sonia, whose husband is missing (probably buried in a lahar avalanche), pretends to be an invalid so she can beg on the streets.

Truth is stranger than fiction and what followed the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo whas much stranger than fiction.
This movie probably didn't have the cash-flow for special effects, but the story was well told and superbly acted.
This movie needs to go international and be subtitled for all the world to see and hear. There are many varieties of disasters the world encounters. Lahar was something most people couldn't even imagine. After all why should anyone be afraid of a little mud?
This movie falls under the category of "memorable" and I will not forget the tradgedy it told. |
